Colton has worked in a variety of museums for the better part of eight years. Holding different positions at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Ellen Noël Art Museum. He has trained in a professional conservation lab performing condition reports, photography, documentation, and conservation treatments.
Most recently Colton was the Associate Curator and Registrar at the Ellen Noël Art Museum. In this position he hung exhibitions of all types and worked with a variety of hanging techniques. There he curated the show Shifting Subjects: The Heroes of the West and worked on exhibits such as 1968: A Folsom Redemption and The Perfect Shot: Walter Iooss Jr. and the Art of Sports Photography.
He has worked with artists such as Doylene Land, Shawn B. Cox, Guadalupe Hernandez, Al Rendon, and more.
